Using Quotations

When you quote the exact words of the original source in your essay, you must
  • cite the source
  • use quotation marks (or use indenting for longer passages)

When is it appropriate to use direct quotations?

Direct quotations should be used sparingly, and are most appropriate in cases when something will be lost by changing the wording of the passage. Otherwise, paraphrasing in your own words is generally preferred. Use direct quotations when:
  • the language of the original phrase is particularly expressive, powerful and succinct
  • the exact original wording has legal, historical or literary significance (Central European University, 2004).

Consult the style guide you are using for further instruction.
