Ship Building and Repair Yards in British Columbia
BC Ferries
BC Ferries maintains a large workforce of marine maintenance workers positioned all over the coast. The private corporation is responsible to the provincial government for the provision of ferry services on the west coast, therefore fleet maintenance is an important consideration. To undertake minor work to terminals and vessels, local maintenance staffs and/or local contractors are retained to address these needs. Major work can be undertaken at Deas Pacific Marine in Richmond, providing for in-water repairs only. Dry dock services are requested via tender as needed.
Point Hope Shipyard
Focused on marine service in the small to medium size category, Point Hope Shipyard is located in Victoria basin and is locally staffed.
Seaspan Corporation
Seaspan Corporation, the largest employer of shipyard workers on the west coast, delivers dry dock, hipbuilding, fleet maintenance, and marine transport services to local, federal and international clients.
Seaspan has shipyards currently deployed in Victoria and Vancouver. Both locations offer a full array of covered and open work sites. Workers engaged in repair activities involving dry dock or out on the hard will be exposed to the elements. The recent Federal Fleet Renewal Program (FFRP) will take place in these facilities with much of the new construction taking place under cover. In preparing for the construction start, Seaspan reviewed yard layouts and building capacities in order to house the contracts awarded.
Regionally employed staffing is expected to grow from approximately 1,000 to 5,000 personnel. The replenishment contract is currently expected to last approximately 20 years.
