Bio-Hazards

Biological hazards (bio-hazards) are substances or organisms that cause a threat to other living things, including humans. Onboard ships, bio-hazards can be found in many different locations. The most common areas are in blackwater or greywater holding tanks. Bio-hazards can also exist in galleys, food containment areas, dirty ships' holds, and even in ventilation systems that are hot and humid.

Known bio-hazards are marked on ships. For example, blackwater compartments and garbage crushing equipment will have international markings on them. When working in these areas, many companies will vaccinate their staff against hepatitis as it can easily be contracted, especially through open cuts or wounds.

Proper handling techniques and appropriate PPE is required. Bio-hazard material can be wet, other times it can be dry like a mold or spore. The message here is to be sure you understand what the material is before you handle it so that all the right PPE is being used. Failure to do so could cause severe long-term chronic health problems.
