Class vs. Subclass

dog

Classification

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Canidae
Genus Canis
Species: Canis lupus familiaris

A class may be a subclass of other class.

  • In the case of animal taxonomy, dog (canis lupus familiaris) is a subclass of the genus canis.
  • We might, if we were dog breeders, also get into distinquishing breeds. In that case, each breed would be a subclass of dog.

Note that:

A subclass has all the defining properties of any class that it belongs to, plus additional defining properties which distinquish the subclass.
